Making the Commitment to Donate Half of My Profit to Charity
I launched The Charity Experiment this year after discovering the effective altruism movement.
According to the official EA website, "effective altruism is a research field which uses high-quality evidence and careful reasoning to work out how to help others as much as possible. It is also a community of people taking these answers seriously, focusing their efforts on the most promising solutions to the world's most pressing problems."
This convergence of logical reasoning and compassion struck me as something that I could and should be involved in. I wanted to have an impact on a movement greater than myself—this was my opportunity. If you're an investment banker who makes a massive amount of money each year, the most impactful thing you might be able to is donate a significant amount of your wealth to a charitable organization that will use it to effectively reduce human suffering.
I'm not an investment banker, I build websites. So I built thecharityexperiment.com.
From now on, I will be donating 50% of the profit that I make from my website design services to the most effective charitable organizations in the world.
Our mission is to raise money and awareness for the most effective charitable organizations in the world.
Each month we nominate three worthy charitable organizations for you to vote on. At the end of the month, we tally the votes and donate the proceeds to the winner. All of the organizations are backed by extensive philanthropic and have been proven to have a real, significant impact on their cause area. Check out the nominees for April and choose an organization that resonates with you.
If you're anything like me, you may be asking "How far will my donation go?"
Further than you might expect. For example, a $2,000 site redesign project would lead to a $1,000 donation. According to The Life You Can Save's Impact Calculator, $1,000 can:
- Provide 400 bed nets to protect those living in malaria-stricken areas from infected mosquitos and protect 602 people from malaria for three to four years. [Against Malaria Foundation]
- Provide safe water to 1,030 community members for one year or treat 11,111 children for diseases caused by parasitic worms. [Evidence Action]
Provide school meal programs to 22 children for one year or provide 15 households with seeds and tools for farming or build 7 latrines to protect the health of families displaced by natural disasters or conflict or build 4 washing stations for hand sanitization at rural schools to prevent the spread of disease. [Oxfam]
This month we also launched the #PennyProject—a campaign created to show just how much good we can all do by making a small, $2 monthly commitment for one year.
I have a full-time job that pays for my living expenses and web design provides discretionary income. I feel like I have an ethical responsibility to bring as much good into the world as I can. If you feel the same way and are thinking of making a similar commitment, feel free to reach out to me.
In the end, everybody wins: a small business improves its web presence, The Charity Experiment gains exposure, and the organizations that we donate to are able to progress their mission.
